Myths & Stigmas

CBD (Cannabidiol) is receiving increased social and legal approval with expanded use in food, wellness products, cosmetics and more. Research is ever-increasing showing CBD can help achieve and maintain balance (homeostasis) and provide therapeutic benefits for pain, sleep, neurological, psychological disorders and more.

Yet, stigmatization and myths associated with CBD still exist largely due to lack of information.

Struggling with what others think? Or, if CBD is a bad thing? These are legitimate concerns, but stigmatization is undue. Incorporating CBD into one’s wellness process should be based on an informed personal decision. Your neighbor, local grocer, boss, relative or next door pet may be reaping the benefits of CBD. Let’s not forget, CBD comes from either hemp or marijuana plants (naturally occurring cannabinoids). Yes, CBD comes from nature (unless synthetically produced). So, does it make sense to stigmatize a product of natural origin? No it doesn’t. Stigma and myths need not weigh in the minds of those considering CBD. Personal convictions, legal, career, medical prohibitions, etc. are valid. Otherwise, misinformation leading to stigmas and myths can be an impediment to one’s conclusion and potential wellness journey.

Confusing? Initially, it can be. Basically stated, Both CBD and THC come from the Cannabis Sativa plant. But both cannabis and hemp plants can produce CBD and THC. CBD from hemp contains less THC. CBD from cannabis contains more THC.

So, let’s address a few common myths.

Myth #1: CBD is addictive. False.

This is false. Scientific studies and the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) in a separate comprehensive 2017 report concluded “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.”

Myth #2: CBD will make you high. False.

Facts:

  • CBD products sold in the U.S. legally must contain less than <0.3% THC – not enough to cause psychoactivity.
  • CBD is commonly derived from Industrialized hemp.
  • CBD (isolate) is often confused with containingTCH (Tetrahydrocannabinol). THC can produce psychoactive effects. Many prefer CBD isolate products to avoid THC consumption.
  • CBD from cannabis contains more THC.
  • CBD boosts the Endocannabinoid (ECS) systems 1 and 2 Our bodies naturally produce endocannabinoids. The ECS system is the brain’s wiring that controls physiology and psychology.

ECS 1 is responsible for mood, stress, sleep and appetite. CB1 is the cannabinoid receptor within the brain. CBD interacts with CB1 and can produce a sense of calm, but no intoxicating high making CBD more accepted and popular.

Myth #3: CBD does not offer therapeutic effects. False.

Scientific research worldwide now dispels this myth indicating CBD to have a range of effects therapeutically useful including anti-seizure, antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-tumor, antipsychotic, anti-anxiety and sleep disorders. Also, pharmaceuticals containing CBD exist to treat children with extreme cases of epilepsy. FDA approved prescription medicines such as Epidiolex®.

Myth #3: CBD doesn’t have side effects. False.

Most CBD contains a carrier oil, which may cause mild stomach upset. Also, if used in larger quantities may cause sleepiness. Many people incorcorpate CBD into their sleep regime for this reason. Otherwise, CBD is safe when produced from trusted sources.

Myth #4: All CBD is safe. False.

In 2018, U.S. Congress passed hemp usage via the Farm bill. CBD isolate and other cannabinoids extracted from hemp and CBD products sold containing less than 0.3% THC are legal in all 50 states. However, CBD products are not U.S FDA regulated. This is why it is critical to:

  1. Purchase CBD products from a trusted source.
  2. Verified products are traceable, contain a certificate of authenticity (COA), and are third-party lab tested, contain no harsh chemicals and are mold, fungus and bacteria free.
  3. Consult with a physician prior to use if necessary.
